She is the mother of the clan. While she run away with her cousin, she was waiting a baby. The baby born and a few months later died and off course he took Esme's life with him, she jumped off a cliff and broke all her bones. While Carlisle was working in the hospital he heard Esme's heartbeat and ran to the morgue (were she was because the people who found her thought she was dead) and saved her.
